The Petzl GriGri+ is a cam-assisted braking belay device for top rope and lead climbing, indoors or out – and it’s the ideal choice if you’re learning to belay or teaching someone else. The anti-panic handle and dedicated top-rope mode make controlled, confident belaying accessible to everyone from first-timers to seasoned climbers.

At its heart is Petzl’s proven cam-assisted blocking: when the climber falls or weights the rope, the action of your brake hand pivots the cam to pinch and hold the rope, giving a smoother, more comfortable catch. As with every Petzl belay device you always keep a hand on the brake strand – the cam simply adds an extra measure of security.

What sets the ‘+’ apart is its versatility. A selector switches between lead mode and ASSIST+ top-rope mode, which pre-activates the cam to make taking in slack easier and helps guard against the rope feeding through if the brake strand is accidentally released. The anti-panic handle is a real confidence-builder for newer belayers: pull too hard while lowering and it disengages, stopping the descent automatically.

Rope installation is straightforward thanks to diagrams engraved on the side plate, while a 3:1 mechanical advantage through the handle makes lowering smooth and controlled across the full diameter range. Aluminium side plates with a stainless steel friction plate and cam are built to last, and the recycled-nylon handle reflects Petzl’s eco-design approach.
