The Gouffre Berger is recognised as one of the world’s great caves. In 1956, under the leadership of the French cave explorer Fernand Petzl, a large international expedition descended past the magical -1,000-metre-mark to reach its terminal sump at a depth of 1,122 metres.

Mark Wright and Robbie Shone, with a team of dedicated assistants, undertook seven photographic expeditions to the Berger between 2010 and 2013 and have produced an informative and impressive showcase of its spectacular underground scenery.
